As well as conducting our own research and evaluation, we also conduct commissioned research and have worked on a number of significant projects with both private and public sector organizations. For example; The Scottish Executive, The Institute of Physics, SCORE (Science Community Representing Education), Save the Children, The Wellcome Trust, The Sutton Trust and the Education Endowment Foundation.

We have extensive expertise in a wide variety of evaluation methods.

  • Randomised Control Trials (RCTs) - Examples of CEM’s work on RCTs include: Every Child Counts, Fife Peer Tutoring, Durham Shared Maths
  • Regression Discontinuity Design - In conjunction with Professor Carole Torgerson, CEM is developing the methodology for the use in education research.
  • Data tracking - CEM is currently working on the Sutton Trust evaluation framework which is being used to monitor and evaluate a wide range of university access / widening participation programmes.
  • Pilot and feasibility studies - CEM is currently supporting the innovation unit's development of Project Based Learning.
  • Qualitative and process evaluations

CEM maintains one of the largest educational data banks in the country, a substantial and invaluable volume of statistical data which has been collected for over two decades.
