Barnsley council may become the first local authority in England to reduce the school summer holidays to less than five weeks.

The change is intended to tackle ‘learning loss’ and a two week break in the October half term is being introduced to balance out the reduction in summer holiday.

The new holidays are due to be introduced in 2017-18 and schools would not break up until 31 July 2018.
