Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan, announced that the Government will not bring forward legislation to force all schools in England to become academies.

However, she stressed that she sees schools becoming academies as the best way to ensure all children have access to world-class education. More schools will be turned into academies, either through governors opting to change their status; if a critical mass of schools in an area had converted; or if a local authority had consistently failed to meet a minimum performance threshold across its schools, demonstrating an inability to bring about meaningful school improvement.”

Mrs Morgan said: “Making every school an academy is the best way to ensure every child, regardless of birth or background, has access to a world-class education.

“I am today reaffirming our determination to see all schools to become academies. However, having listened to the feedback from Parliamentary colleagues and the education sector we will now change the path to reaching that goal.”
