Shadow Education Secretary Lucy Powell has spoken about her desire to give a greater role to local authorities and her opposition to new grammar schools in an interview published in The Guardian.

However, Ms Powell said that she was too new in post to give details of many policy areas, particularly with a general election five years away.

The piece also noted that her language on local authority involvement in schools had softened, shifting from ‘control’ to ‘oversight’.
